About the project

The goal of this VISTA project is to ensure that all students can access and succeed in high impact educational experiences and achieve their personal and professional goals. The VISTA will support the establishment of a mission, vision, and programs for a future "Office of Undergraduate Research"; develop resources and materials for students and faculty mentors; implement faculty professional development: “Mentoring Undergraduate Researchers through Inclusive, Effective, and Equitable Practices”; and support Upward Bound through the development of summer curriculum, recruitment, and training of teachers for project-based learning.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO IMPROVE SUPPORT FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH?

Have you participated in undergraduate research at Cal Poly? (OR) Would you like to participate in undergraduate research during your time at Cal Poly? If so, we invite you to participate in this research project that will provide insight into better supporting undergraduate research coordination at Cal Poly! Please read more about this invitation below.

A research project on undergraduate research experiences is being conducted by the Undergraduate Research Association club, in collaboration with the LSAMP Program and Dr. Jane Lehr in the Center for Engineering, Science & Mathematics Education (CESAME) at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. The purpose of the study is to collect data around student perspectives of undergraduate research experiences, both related to accessibility and perceived benefits. Specifically, the researchers are seeking to explore how students do or do not get involved with undergraduate research experiences, the perceived benefits of participating in research, and how Cal Poly can better support this process. This survey will be distributed broadly because we want to evaluate and assess how undergraduate research recruitment occurs across departments and colleges, identify what is working well, and make changes, as necessary, to better support undergraduate research across the institution.

You are being asked to take part in this study by completing an online questionnaire hosted by the Undergraduate Research Association club at Cal Poly. The survey begins with a few questions about your standing and involvement at Cal Poly, while the remainder of the survey asks whether or not you have participated in research at Cal Poly, what you gained or hope to gain from participating, and what Cal Poly infrastructure would best support students seeking to get involved.

Your participation will take approximately 10 minutes. Please be aware that you are not required to participate in this research, you may omit any items that you prefer not to answer, and you may discontinue your participation at any time without penalty.

The risks associated with participation in this study are minimal, but may include emotional or psychological distress that may arise from remembering a negative experience that has occurred. If you should experience emotional or psychological distress, please be aware that you may contact campus Counseling Services at 805-756-2511 for assistance.

Your responses will be provided anonymously to protect your privacy. If you choose to provide your name, email, or other identifying information in any of your answers, this will only be visible to the research team. Data provided by the research team to university administration will be aggregated, with any identifying information removed to maintain confidentiality.

Potential benefits associated with the study include improving support for undergraduate research experiences for both yourself and for future students.

To thank you for considering participation in this survey, the research team is offering for you to be entered into a raffle for a $25 Starbucks gift card. The odds of winning will vary depending on the number of entries, but are estimated to be less than 1 in 100. If you wish to be entered into the raffle, you can do so even if you do not complete the survey, the team will need your name and email to contact you if you win. Please be assured that the file containing these names will be completely separate from the file of survey responses; this list of names will not be used for any other purpose.

If you have questions regarding this study or would like to be informed of the results when the study is completed, please feel free to contact Nicki Holm (nholm@calpoly.edu). If you have concerns regarding the manner in which the study is conducted, you may contact Dr. Michael Black, Chair of the Cal Poly Human Subjects Committee (mblack@calpoly.edu or (805) 756-2894), or Ms. Debbie Hart, Compliance Officer (dahart@calpoly.edu or (805) 756-1508).

Please note that you may only provide consent to participate in this survey if you are 18 or over. If you agree to voluntarily participate in this research project as described, please indicate your agreement by completing and submitting the following questionnaire.  Please print a copy of this consent form now for your reference, and thank you for your participation in this research.
